- TO - PRIVATE FIRST CLASS WINTERS
- FOR - Heroic achievement in action while serving with defending forces in or around Oosterbeek LZ, Holland, September 1944. After the leadership of his squad was destroyed, Private First Class Winters took command of the squad, setting up a base of fire and organizing a retreat to friendly positions to their rear to preserve the remainder of the squad while ensuring order was kept despite the loss of leadership. Upon successfully linking up with friendly Infantry, Private First Class Winters and his element were heavily engaged resulting in him being fatally wounded. His courageous act and initiative in command was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Armed Services.
